Can You Plug An Unbalanced Cable Into A Balanced Input

Can You Plug An Unbalanced Cable Into A Balanced Input. Just makes sure phantom power isnt supplied these inputs or is off. I am going to a remote session where they are using a bass preamp that will generate line level signals out of two unbalanced 1/4 outputs, for stereo operation.

Also jacking from balanced to unbalanced can cause noise (di boxes can sometimes help here). A balanced circuit needs to be three wires (positive, negative, and ground) all the way through. If you start with an unbalanced source and an unbalanced cable (two wires) that signal will remain unbalanced when you plug it into a balanced input.

This Connects The Xlr Pin 3 To Ground, Thereby Effectively Transforming The Consoles Xlr Out To An Unbalanced Output.

Note That You Loose The Common Mode Rejection Typical For A Balanced Connection, But Since You Are Using A Low Output Impedance Source, This Will Probably Not Be A Problem, Unless You Use Unusually Long Cables.

This inverted, or reverse polarity, signal is used to cancel noise and to make the signal. You can — with some caveats. And if it has three, it's balanced.

However, Most Unbalancing That Results From Plugging A Trs Cable Into A Ts Jack Has More To Do With The Jack Than The Cable Itself.

An unbalanced audio signal can come from the cable or the jack. A balanced cable can only deliver a balanced audio signal when plugged into a balanced output. If you use unbalanced cable that doesn't carry the inverted signal, the initial signal is still carried across the cable, so it will work.

My audio interface accepts either balanced or unbalanced 1/4 jacks into its inputs, and out of its outputs. Connect pin 3 and 1 to ground and pin 2 to signal, and a balanced input will act as an unbalanced input. The in between should be connected with a balanced cable.

You should be able to get away with plugging unbalanced outputs from synths, drum machines, samplers, fx units, etc. Can you plug an unbalanced cable into a balanced input?
